for careers and four-year degrees in art and design.
Develop your skills for professional practice, from drawing and photography, to sculpture,
animation, and video. You’ll also learn what it takes to prepare your work for public
exhibitions.
An Associate of Fine Arts in Studio Art for Graphic Design will give you the foundation
to pursue many creative careers, from a gallery artist to an illustrator, fashion
designer, or ceramicist. But the critical thinking, observational and analytical skills
you develop will position you for success in any profession.

Students in SCC’s A.F.A. in Studio Art for Graphic Design program will be trained
in the fundamentals of artistic production, from figure drawing to color theory and
design principles. They will also be able to take classes in a wide range of areas
that interest them, from traditional black & white photography to textile arts, video,
and animation.
Students who earn an A.F.A. will create a portfolio demonstrating their abilities
and be well-prepared to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a degree in
art or design.
Students will be able to:
- Use formal artistic vocabulary to communicate the content, context, and process of
their work
- Apply the techniques and processes of discovery in studio art and design
- Understand principles of artistic and design theory, demonstrating knowledge of past
and present works of art from diverse methods and cultures
- Articulate a response to works in the humanities, arts, and design, based upon aesthetic
standards
- Create, select, and present proficient, finished work for exhibition and evaluation
purposes
- Demonstrate a strong skill base in critical thinking, problem-solving, communication,
analysis, observation, and organization
