Next Steps

What to Expect

Course rigor: All dual enrollment courses will be taught at the college level. The course content and syllabus will be approved by SCC academic departments. You can expect dual enrollment courses to be more difficult than standard high school courses.

Grades: You will be graded according to SCC standards and may be required to take a departmental final exam upon completion of the course.

Academic record: The credits and grades you earn through the Dual Enrollment program will become part of your permanent academic record at SCC and documented on your official school transcript.

Policies and procedures: You will be expected to follow SCC policies and procedures. The SCC catalog and student handbook are available here.

Attendance: Attendance is crucial and can directly affect your grade.

Course withdrawal: If a student wishes to drop a dual enrollment course, it is the student's responsibility to formally withdraw from the class. Contact the Dual Enrollment Coordinator for information regarding the withdrawal process. Failure to follow these procedures will result in an F on the student's transcript. Payment is still required. Visit the Academic Calendar for a detailed refund schedule and payment information.

Textbooks: Textbooks are available at the SCC Bookstore. Consumable materials such as workbooks and online passkeys may be required. A book buy-back is scheduled at the end of each semester for qualifying textbooks.

  • Your student is considered a college student even though they are still in high school.
  • College students have more freedom than they experience in high school.
  • College courses include complex work and require a great deal of responsibility to manage.
  • Students must be self-motivated and self-disciplined.
  • College courses can be more stressful than high school classes.
  • Dual-enrolled students are considered adults regardless of their age.
  • Your student will follow the course syllabus in regard to assignments, exams, and deadlines. Unless specified, requests for additional assignments, extra credit, and extended deadlines will be not considered. The student may contact the faculty member for possible exceptions. Exceptions are not guaranteed.

Due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), we are only allowed to discuss student academic information with the student. FERPA is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.

FERPA applies to all college students even those who are under the age of 18. Most dual-enrollment forms include a release for parent access. However, if the form your student completed does not include the release, then they should complete the FERPA release form and email it from their SCC email to dualenroll@stchas.edu.

Even if a FERPA release is completed, students will need to contact the course faculty for any issues regarding their classes. Faculty are not allowed to discuss academic information with the parent.

For more information  information from the U.S. Department of Education on what parents and students need to know about FERPA regulations, watch this video.

Because each institution establishes its own transfer credit policies, St. Charles Community College cannot guarantee the transfer of credits outside the CORE 42 to another university. SCC has many transfer agreements with other colleges and universities. Students are responsible for consulting with other college institutions about their transfer policies.

Additional information about transferring your SCC credits:

It is important to note that the credits you complete at SCC will follow you all throughout college years. The credits will always be a part of your college transcripts.
