Learn to tell stories through lyric essays and memoirs, try your hand at a sci-fantasy
screenplay, or pen a series of prose poems. Whatever your aspirations and vision may
be, SCC will give you the freedom and the tools you need to develop your own unique
voice.
While you’re at SCC, you can share your work through our literary annual, the Mid Rivers Review, and at our Coffeehouse open mics.

Students in SCC’s Creative Writing programs will hone their craft through workshops
in specific genres as well as courses in publishing and literary study. You’ll take
non-fiction, poetry, and fiction writing classes, complemented by literature courses
and expository writing exercises. You will gain experience in broad applications for
writing to build on your natural talents and better understand your own interests
in the field.
A.F.A. students will graduate with a refined creative writing portfolio, prepared
to continue their studies at a four-year institution.
The skills you develop at SCC will be invaluable to diverse fields, including teaching,
publishing, marketing, and journalism. We will nurture your understanding of language
and storytelling and develop your analytical and observational abilities. Ultimately,
you’ll be better able to see the complexities of the world—and the people in it—with
a discerning and understanding eye.
Students will:
- Be able to use formal vocabulary and principles to discuss literary works, including
their own, their peers’, and professional writers.
- Experience writing in various genres, from fiction to non-fiction to poetry.
- Understand principles of literary theory, criticism, and history and can apply those
principles during class workshops and through expository writing.
- Demonstrate knowledge of past and present works of literature from diverse methods
and cultures.
