Non-Credit Programs

These are non-credit, certificate courses. The admission requirements vary from program to program. More information about each program's requirements are listed with each program.

SCC’s Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course is designed for current healthcare providers and those who are planning to work in healthcare. This non-credit class fulfills the skills portion of a two-part, BLS certification course required for students in our RN, PN, OTA, and MA programs. See registration requirements below for details.

SCC’s BLS course fulfills the skills portion of a two-part class required for students in SCC’s RN, PN, OTA, and MA programs. Prior to enrolling, students must successfully complete the cognitive portion of the BLS course online through the American Heart Association (AHA). A separate fee applies. 

 
Note: Students must present a printed certificate of completion from the online AHA course when they arrive in class. Students who do not have their certificate will not be allowed to stay in class.

Are you looking for a meaningful career in healthcare where you can combine your attention to detail with your desire to help people? SCC’s Certified Medication Technician (CMT) program may be perfect for you!   

CMTs administer medications to patients in residential care facilities and assist nurses with medication therapy. They may also assist residents with personal care and document details about patient condition and behavior. CMTs may be entrusted with the safe storage of medication, including controlled substances, like narcotics. 

SCC’s CMT program comprises classroom instruction, clinical work, and a final certification exam. Upon successful completion of the program, you’ll be eligible for the CMT registry in the state of Missouri and ready to work.  

The CMT program at SCC provides the 65 contact hours of classroom instruction required for certification in the state of Missouri. Students must also complete 24 hours of clinical observation at their employing facility. Once these components are successfully completed, students may take the final exam, which has written and clinical components.

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • CNA certification with at least 6 months of work experience in the field 
  • Currently employed in an intermediate or skilled nursing facility that is authorized and willing to provide supervision for the clinical hours 

You must also submit the following to be eligible to register: 

  • Letter of recommendation from the director or nursing or an administrator from your employing facility, completed on this form.  
  • Copy of your high school diploma or GED/HiSET certificate 
  • Copy of CNA certificate 
  • Negative 2-step TB test results (received w/in 12 months prior to registration) 
  • Acceptable background screening from the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry (received w/in 90 day prior to registration) 
  • To be eligible for registration, candidates must hold a high school diploma or GED/HiSET certificate, be a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) for at least six months prior to program start and be currently employed at a skilled or intermediate care facility. Candidates are required to submit a letter of recommendation from the Director of Nursing or equivalent administrator at the time of registration.

Are you ready for the next step in your healthcare career? Take the CMT Challenge Exam.  

The CMT Challenge Exam includes a written test and a skills demonstration. Those registering for the exam must be currently employed at an intermediate or skilled nursing facility, have an active Missouri CNA certificate, and have written approval from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS).  

Exam dates will be set by SCC’s Health Occupations Program Coordinator once all paperwork is submitted and verified.  

The exam consists of a written and practicum (clinical) exam. Students must score at least an 80% on the written exam to move onto the practicum portion. Students must score 100% on the practicum portion or qualify for certification.

The exam may be taken up to two times in a 90-day period following the completion of the classroom instruction. An additional $125 fee will be assessed for each retest.

  • Copy of your CNA certificate 
  • Written approval from the Missouri DHSS (issued within four months of the exam date)

Do you have a passion for helping people? Are you dependable and kind, hoping to make a difference?  

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are an important part of the care team for hospital patients and individuals in residential settings. You’ll be trained to work in nursing homes, hospitals, home care agencies and doctors’ offices. 

SCC’s two-part CNA program, approved by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, provides the instruction and on-the-job training required to become a CNA in the state of Missouri. You’ll develop the nursing skills, communication techniques, safety methods, and knowledge you’ll need to sit for the state certification exam and become a CNA. 

There are three different components that make up the CNA Program and St. Charles Community College offers two of them: class instruction and clinical internship. The state certification exam is coordinated and proctored through an outside agency. Students must complete all three components in order to be certified in the state of Missouri. 

The classroom portion of the CNA provides the 75 hours of preparation required by DHSS. All classes are held online through Canvas. Students must have a combined average of 80% on all exams to pass the online classroom portion of the program.

The clinical portion of this course provides the 100 hours of on-the-job training required by DHSS. Students who are already employed at an intermediate or skilled care facility approved by the State of Missouri and the SCC program administrator may elect to do their clinical training through their employer. Scheduling options vary from five days a week to M/W/F to Tu/Th, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Evening shifts may be available but are not guaranteed.  

Tuition: $350 

Please note: enrollment in the classroom portion of the CNA program does not guarantee acceptance into the clinical internship.

This program is offered in an accelerated, hybrid format during the summer semester (lasting approximately eight weeks). Students can expect to complete coursework online, attend three in-person lab days, and participate in twelve clinical shifts at a long-term care facility. Please see the breakdown below for specific dates.

This program, approved by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), provides the instruction and on-the-job training required to become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in the state of Missouri. The program teaches basic nursing skills, resident rights, safety, communication techniques and infection control. CNA's are eligible for employment in nursing homes, hospitals, home care agencies and doctor’s offices.

There are three different components that make up the CNA Program and St. Charles Community College offers two of them: classroom instruction/lab hours and clinical internship. Individuals MUST be at least 18 years of age to qualify for this course.

Because of the accelerated nature of this course, no lab absences will be permitted. Failure to attend a lab session may result in failure of the program.

The clinical internship provides the 100 hours of on-the-job training required for CNA certification in the state of Missouri. Students will be placed at one of our clinical partner facilities to complete these hours and will be required to be at the clinical site four times per week (see schedule above for dates). ATTENDANCE ON ALL CLINICAL DAYS IS MANDATORY. Because of the accelerated nature of this course, no absences will be permitted. Failure to attend a clinical session may result in failure of the program.

Prior to beginning their clinical hours, students will be required to complete and pass a urine drug screening (done at a facility designated by SCC). Information and required paperwork will be provided to the student during the registration process. 

The state certification exam is completed through a third-party vendor. Information on how to register and pay for this exam will be provided in class.

This online self-paced course is designed to prepare the RN or LPN to supervise Nurse Assistant students during their 100 hours of on-the-job training in a licensed long term care facility.

Students can register at any time and the program includes 24/7 online access. The content is integrated into an interactive learning experience which includes automatic grading, virtual interaction with the instructor and electronic tracking of grades. Students have one week to complete this course. Most students average 5-6 hours to finish all required coursework.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be placed on the Missouri Registry and receive a certificate of completion from St. Charles Community College.

Become a dental assistant in just 15 weeks! 

Are you looking for an in-demand career that combines your passion for healthcare with your technical, organizational, and people skills? Register for SCC’s Dental Assisting Program. 

Dental assistants play an important role in a patient’s health. They prepare instruments for cleanings and surgeries, take X-rays, help fit dental appliances, manage supplies and record-keeping, and schedule appointments. Students will be trained to assist with procedures and provide patients with empathetic care.  

Our program is designed to be completed in just four months. You can complete the coursework online at your own pace, and you’ll get 100 hours of hands-on clinical experience in dental offices to ensure you’re well-prepared for your new career. 

SCC’s Dental Assisting program is designed to be completed in four months (one semester), but students are allowed up to 12 months to provide the flexibility to study part-time. Students will complete all traditional coursework through asynchronous, online modules. They will also be required to complete 100 externship hours at an approved partner facility.

SCC’s IV Therapy Program trains nurses to administer IV therapies, and the bulk of your coursework will be completed asynchronously online through Canvas, making it easier to accommodate in busy schedules. Students will participate in one day of in-person clinical training at an approved facility. The program is open to current LPNs and RNs. See full details on eligibility below.  

Our curriculum is approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing, and nurses who successfully complete the course will be certified for IV therapy in the state of Missouri.  

*Please note: this program does not cover insulin training/certification. 

Students will complete online, asynchronous coursework through Canvas followed by an 8-hour clinical practicum at an offsite facility, where you will learn to administer an IV. The clinical hours will be arranged with the instructor once the required online coursework has been completed.

This 4-hour workshop meets the Department of Health and Senior Services requirement for Level 1 Medication Aide recertification. This training must be completed every two years for workers to continue to administer medication in a residential care or assisted living facility. 

Note: This program does not provide insulin training/certification. 

Students who successfully complete the requirements will be certified for two years as a level 1 medication aide.

Join the growing field of healthcare workers as a medical administrative assistant! Our interactive, online program gives you the specialized training in electronic healthcare records (HER) to put you at the forefront of this in-demand career. 

Supported by dedicated, experienced instructors, you’ll learn to use state-of-the-art software, master healthcare documentation and reimbursement practices, and properly manage your time and office responsibilities. Because the program is self-paced, students have the flexibility to complete the 200 hours of coursework on their own timeline (up to eight months).

The AHIMA-approved Professional Medical Coding and Billing Professional course content aligned to the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification Exams. Topics studied include healthcare information management, reimbursement methodologies, biomedical sciences, and current code sets, including an in-depth look at ICD-10-PCS. Students practice their coding skills in an extensive practical section to gain valuable hands-on experience before graduation. 

  • Course Content Aligned to the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) certification exam
  • CPC exam voucher included, and learner can sit for this exam online twice at no additional cost (this will be the only vouchers included in the cost)
  • Free Membership to AAPC included

Are you looking for an interesting career in healthcare where you can work remotely from home? Becoming a medical transcription editor may be the path for you! 

This 12-month, online program will develop the skills you need to become a medical transcriptionist or medical transcription editor. Working with authentic dictations from a variety of medical specialties, you’ll study medical terminology, human anatomy, healthcare documentation, and editing theory and technique.

SCC’s online medical transcription program is approved by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). Students should anticipate spending 10-15 hours per week on coursework and must complete the program within 12 months. 

Tuition includes all course materials, including e-books, a transcription foot pedal, an AHDI membership, a subscription to an online reference library, and a voucher to take the RHDS exam.

Are you looking for a position in the healthcare field where you can work directly with patients and get into the workforce fast? SCC’s Patient Care Technician program may be for you. 

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) work alongside nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals in an acute care setting. Students are trained to perform clinical skills, assist patients with daily activities, and provide pre- and post-operative care.  

St. Charles Community College is proud to partner with BJC HealthCare and SSM Health Ministries on this six-week, accelerated PCT program, which combines online classroom instruction, in-person lab training, and clinical hours at a partner facility.  

Students selected for the program will attend tuition-free as a paid employee of either BJC or SSM.

SCC’s PCT training program satisfies the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services requirements for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). SCC trains three cohorts per year with both BJC and SSM. Students selected for these programs will attend tuition-free and be paid an hourly wage. Up-to-date program schedules can be found on the registration form. Students must fulfill all aspects of their training to qualify for these programs. If the employment commitment is not fulfilled, students will be required to refund the partner institution the cost of tuition ($2,000). 

Individuals selected for the BJC programs will be hired as <job title> and will complete online coursework at SCC through Canvas. Every other week, you will participate in an all-day, on-campus lab. You will also complete four weeks of clinical training, working three 12-hour shifts per week at a designated BJC facility.  

Participating BJC facilities: Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, Progress West Hospital, or Christian Hospital 

Starting wage: $15/hr 

Minimum employment commitment: 12 months (following program)   

Individuals selected for the SSM programs will be hired as paid, part-time Clinical Partner 1 Students during training and transition to full-time Clinical Partner 1 status upon successful completion of the program. Students will complete three weeks of didactic instruction with SCC and three weeks of clinical practice at SSM Health. Didactic and clinical weeks alternate through the six-week training program. Didactic instruction includes online coursework three days per week and a full day of clinical labs. Clinical weeks include three 12-hour shifts at a designated SSM facility.

Are you interested in science and medicine? Looking for an accelerated path to a healthcare career? SCC’s Pharmacy Technician program may be a great fit for you! 

Pharmacy technicians are detail-oriented professionals who work in retail, hospital, and long-term care pharmacies as well as for licensed prescription vendors. They help verify prescription information, maintain patient records, assist customers, and ensure medications are properly stocked and stored.  

SCC’s Pharmacy Tech program is taught by a registered pharmacist. You will learn about drug classifications and interactions, the basics of physiology and medical terminology, and how to process drug prescriptions. You’ll also develop important professional and career readiness skills that are applicable to any job.  

SCC will teach you everything you need to learn to become a successful pharmacy technician.

This 10-week hybrid course consists of online class work, Zoom meetings, and on-campus labs. Attendance/participation in all components is mandatory.

Are you looking to break into the expanding field of healthcare and get on the job quickly? SCC’s Phlebotomy program may be a good fit for you! 

Our six-week program prepares students for entry-level positions as phlebotomists in hospitals, clinical labs, and physician offices. Students learn various techniques for drawing blood and gain experience in specimen collection, transport, and the reporting and recording of patient data.  

Following successful completion of the program, students will be prepared to sit for the national certification exam.

This six-week, hybrid course consists of online classroom instruction and coursework on Canvas, Zoom meetings, on-campus labs, and 120 clinical hours, where you will become adept at venipuncture techniques. Clinical hours are scheduled during business hours, 4-5 days a week.

Are you interested in advancing in your career as an RN? Are you comfortable working in acute care situations and playing a critical role in procedures? SCC’s Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) Program may put you on the career path you’re looking for.   

RNFAs act as a surgeon’s first assistant during an operation. They may be asked to help suture, trim tissue, and operate specialized medical equipment. You’ll be involved in all aspects of a patient’s perioperative care.  

Our RNFA program follows an AORN-approved curriculum, which includes classroom instruction as well as clinical hours in an internship. You’ll earn six academic credit hours upon successful completion of the course.

  • Successful completion of the classroom/didactic objectives including the final written exam. 
  • Successful completion of the clinical objectives including documentation of clinical procedures and activities. 
  • Students must complete 120 clinical hours within six months of beginning the program.
  • Attendance/participation in all components is mandatory.

  • Bachelor's degree  
  • Licensed to practice as an RN license through end of program 
  • Certification in BLS/ACLS, valid through end of program 
  • Certified as a perioperative nurse (CNOR) or an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)  
  • Two years of full-time perioperative experience (4000 hours) or four years of part-time perioperative experience within the last five years. 

Required Documents: 

  • Agreement from employing institution to provide the required clinical experience  
  • A copy of your official transcripts 
  • Copy of your RN license, BLS or ACLS card, and your CNOR or APRN certificate 
  • Support from surgeon preceptor at an approved facility who will provide a minimum of 120 hours of supervised clinical practicum as required by the course objectives.
