After experiencing some major life changes, Teresa Carnahan knew it was time to update her skills and earn her degree.

Due to her husband’s job that required frequent moves, Teresa was constantly being uprooted from her home, which left her unable to complete her associate’s degree at Tulsa Community College. After getting divorced and knowing she could stay in one place for an extended period of time, Teresa decided it was time to return to school. St. Charles Community College seemed like the logical place to go.

“Returning to school has not only helped me develop new skills, it has also helped me regain my self-worth.”

Teresa’s family has supported her return to school and has been extremely helpful during her transition as a returning learner.

“My daughter is so proud of me for returning to school. She is always happy to listen to my speeches and look over my projects. All of my family and friends have been so supportive since I’ve returned to school.”

Teresa, who plans on earning her Associate of Science Degree in human services, said her most memorable moment at SCC was being asked to be the historian for SCC’s chapter of Tau Upsilon Alpha National Organization for Human Services Honor Society.

“My goals for the rest of my time at SCC are to do my absolute best, learn as much as I can and enjoy the college experience.”

After graduating from SCC, the next step in Teresa’s education will be to attend the University of Missouri–St. Louis and earn a bachelor’s degree in social work. She has plans to continue her education even further; her goal is to earn a master’s degree and become a therapist.

“I have done two internships so far, one at the Crisis Nursery Center and another at St. Charles County Children’s Division. I loved both and ideally would like to start my career at one of them. I just want to help people.”

“Coming to St. Charles Community College has been an extremely rewarding experience. SCC has empowered me and given me more confidence. I am excited to take the knowledge I have learned at SCC with me to wherever life’s journey takes me next!”
