Taylor Rector’s higher education journey began in 2012 when she graduated early from Timberland High School.

“At the time, I was unsure of what I wanted to do because I had multiple interests in a variety of fields.”

During her time at Timberland, Taylor participated in the A+ Program to help eliminate some of the financial stresses associated with college. Ultimately, the program’s benefits and the appeal of proximity to home led Taylor to SCC.

One of Taylor’s many interests was business, which she took notice of after participating in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) in high school.

“From the beginning of my college career I pursued a degree in business administration. After taking more specialized courses at SCC, I became drawn toward marketing.”

Specialized courses aren’t the only thing that made SCC valuable to Taylor; the instructors and students she met on campus made her college experience fun and memorable.

“My instructors wanted to get to know their students on a personal level. This is something that is very hard to find at a larger university,” Taylor said. “It’s easy to get lost in the crowd, but it is truly amazing to have instructors that care about their students and their success.”

Taylor also found she had a lot in common with her classmates.

“I met a handful of people with the same goals and interests as myself. They helped encourage me to stay on track and reassured me of my doubts.”

Taylor, who earned her Associate of Arts degree from SCC in August 2015, is still taking classes at SCC while dual-enrolled at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.

“The knowledge I gained from SCC laid a strong foundation to build the rest of my education on and has greatly helped me further my educational career at UMSL.”

Taylor is currently working toward completing her bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing. She is confident that she can make a difference in the global business world with everything that she has learned from SCC and UMSL.

“After completing my bachelor’s degree, I would like to eventually earn a master’s degree,” Taylor said. “I want to further my education as much as I can! Knowledge is power, and this will help me stand out in a large sea of graduates.”
