Like many freshmen, Andrew Lozano didn’t know what field to study when he started college. He’s changed his major five times, and he says with each shift he’s moved closer to what he wants to do.

“I have finally found what I was meant to do, and the SCC Science Department staff played a major role in helping to guide me along,” he said. “I initially took an introductory chemistry class on a whim to give myself a challenge and try something new, and I have been in love with chemistry ever since.”

With the support of the Chemistry and Biology departments, Andrew settled on biochemistry as a major.

“I cannot stress enough how amazed I am with not only the quality of the education at SCC, but maybe more importantly, the personal care and concern from the professors that every student does well,” Andrew said. “The one-on-one time I received with my professors went a long way in helping me with my success at SCC.”

Andrew plans to continue his education at a four-year university and earn a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. From there, he sees himself attending graduate school and attaining either a master’s degree or doctorate.

He has hopes to one-day work in pharmaceutical research and drug diversity and to discover life-saving medications and treatments.
