Students and community members are invited to the inaugural event for SCC’s new Entrepreneurial Institute.

The Symposium will feature six speakers who are business leaders in our community, and will give real-world insights, networking and mentorship opportunities, skill development, and career exploration.

Meet the Speakers

Headshot of Randy SchillingRandy Schilling is the visionary Chief Executive Officer and Founder of MuniBit, a cutting-edge platform providing website building and digital tools tailored for small and medium-sized municipalities to better serve their residents.

A passionate entrepreneur, Randy also owns and founded OPO Startups, an innovation hub and coworking space designed to foster collaboration and growth among entrepreneurs, freelancers, remote workers, and small businesses. Nestled within the historic 1909 “Old Post Office” and six adjacent buildings in Downtown Saint Charles, OPO Startups offers over 65,000 square feet of inspiring workspace.

Randy’s extensive entrepreneurial background includes founding BoardPaq, an intuitive and secure board portal for streamlining paperless board, leadership, and committee meetings. Established in 2010, BoardPaq rapidly grew to serve over 1,300 customers and earned a place on the Inc. 5000 list for three consecutive years under Randy’s leadership.

Prior to that, Randy was the CEO and Founder of Quilogy, a nationally managed Microsoft system integrator, which originated in St. Charles, Missouri. With an initial personal investment of $5,000, Randy launched the company in 1992 as Solutech, Inc. Under his guidance, Quilogy expanded to over 500 employees and 16 offices across the country.

Randy holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri – Columbia and an MBA from the University of Illinois – Springfield, Illinois. His exceptional business acumen and entrepreneurial success have led to prestigious recognitions, including being named the 2000 Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Missouri Small Business Person of the Year and the 1997 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Technology category for the St. Louis Region.

A proud long-time resident of his hometown of St. Charles, Missouri, Randy actively contributes to numerous business and civic organizations. He serves as a Director at CASS Information Systems (NASDAQ: CASS), the nation’s premier provider of transportation, utility, and telecom invoice payment and information services. With a solid educational foundation and a history of outstanding achievements, Randy Schilling continues to make a significant impact on both the local and national business landscape.

Headshot of Karson QuinnCurrent SCC student and former CAPS high school student Karson Quinn is the owner of a successful trash can cleaning and soft wash company. Despite several hurdles and setbacks, he refused to let obstacles define his future. Fueled by a desire to succeed and a never-give-up attitude, Karson took control of his circumstances and began the work of building his business from the ground up.

Through relentless effort, creativity, and sheer perseverance, Karson managed to turn his trash can cleaning company into a thriving business within just three months. His story of overcoming adversity is a testament to the power of determination and resilience. From having his life and finances nearly wiped out to building a five-figure company, Karson’s journey proves that with the right mindset and work ethic, no setback is too big to overcome.

Headshot of Mel JonesMel Jones is an Assistant Vice President at HUB International, the 5th largest insurance brokerage in the world. Mel brings over 15 years of experience working in the insurance industry, partnering with organizations to build cost-conscious strategies that align with their organizational culture and business goals. Her primary role at HUB is to advocate for their clients and develop trusted strategic client partnerships. Mel manages the clients’ needs and is a conduit to HUB’s resources and subject matter experts. By leveraging her strengths, Mel is able to deeply understand her clients at their core and provide them with a more holistic, authentic, and configurable approach. She helps the organization create a vision of what the future looks like for employees and key stakeholders.

Additionally, Mel serves as the Immediate Past President of the Board of Directors of SHRM of Greater St. Louis, the leading organization for human resource professionals in St. Louis. Mel is a mentor and advocate to many young professionals and enjoys sharing her story to help inspire the next generation of leaders. Professionally, she’s known as a master networker and connector of people, and as a servant leader with her clients and team members. Her natural curiosity, empathy, and desire to help elevate ideas and people, have accelerated her personal and professional growth to an elite level.

Before joining HUB, Mel managed her own small insurance firm after working for a well-known Fortune 500 company, where she led the charts as a premier trusted partner to many businesses and consulting firms. Her successful entrepreneurial efforts eventually led to her working as an executive for three of the world’s largest consulting firms. Mel’s responsibilities have included client management, new business development, team coaching, project management, and personalized customer service. She’s an inspirational and empathic leader who believes we are all here for a greater purpose.

Mel grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Webster University and East Central College. She holds licenses in Property, Casualty, Life, Accident, and Health.

Cherie Summa HeadshotCherie Summa, P.E., Professional Engineer and CEO of St. Louis Radon, is a standout expert in the radon mitigation industry, with a multifaceted background that uniquely equips her for this role. A Missouri University of Science and Technology alumna with a degree in Geological Engineering, Cherie also holds certifications as a General Contractor and Professional Engineer across four states. Her extensive civil engineering experience span project and construction management for large residential developments and waste management projects, as well as quality control for major infrastructure like interstate highways.

Cherie is certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP/AARST) and is an active member of the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technicians (AARST), where she serves as the Vice President of the Heartland Chapter. She is also a certified radon measurement and mitigation technician in Illinois through the Illinois Emergency Management Association (IEMA). Her commitment to raising awareness about lung cancer is evident through her roles on the Board of Lung Cancer Connection, the Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce, and the AARST National Advocacy Committee. Additionally, she contributes to the Radon Reduction Work Team for the Missouri Lung Cancer Coalition.

In 2020, Cherie earned recognition as one of Small Business Monthly's "Top 100 St. Louisans To Know to Succeed in Business." Beyond her leadership at St. Louis Radon, she also manages Waste Connections’ St. Louis Champ Landfill, transfer station, and Sustainability Campus as District Manager.

Leo Anglo HeadshotAfter earning his Bachelor’s in Finance and MBA from St. Louis University, Leo settled into the jewelry industry for the next 35 years, 30 of them with Vincent’s Jewelers. He has been involved in all aspects of the jewelry industry. He has served two terms as President of the Missouri Jewelers Association, written for many trade publications, and held training and leadership programs at the local, state, and national level.

Leo lives with a personal motto that “anyone wanting to be the greatest must be the least...the servant of all! (Mark 9:3) Service is not what you do, it is who you are every day!”  

Leo generously shares his time, talent, and treasure. He logs in more than 600 labor-intensive volunteer hours per year. Much of this is at LaSalle Retreat Center as a “do-it-all” volunteer for over 15 years. For his service and support, Leo was bestowed the “Letter of Benefaction” by the LaSallian Order.

Leo’s time, talent, and treasure have also been shared with Vianney, Sacred Heart Valley Park, Cor Jesu, St. Louis Crisis Nursery, and others…filling in wherever he is needed. He makes a positive I and remisn visible decades later with his time, talent, and treasures also shared with strangers in need that he runs across.

Leo is blessed with his wife, Nancy, since 1993, and two daughters, Claire and Lauren. They support Leo, whether he is at a charity event, changing a clutch on a tractor, or building cabinets

SCC Entrepreneurial Institute

Inspired by our partnership with Confluence Tech Hub, a nonprofit coalition in St. Charles County creating and fostering a thriving ecosystem of technology and entrepreneurship, SCC’s Business Department is developing an Entrepreneurial Institute.

 

Our Mission

The mission of the institute is to serve as a resource for students, faculty, staff, and the community, with an interest in entrepreneurship, working with startups, leveraging leading-edge technology, along with business partners in the SCC region and service area. The Entrepreneurial Institute will provide an incubator center focused on new and emerging businesses and innovative technologies in alignment with instructional programming.

Our Vision

The vision is to provide a thriving community of starters, builders, advisors, and early-stage investors, committed to transforming the St. Charles region through innovation and collaboration, to recruit and retain students and businesses, which possess an entrepreneurial mindset.

 

Our Goals

The goals are: (1) To identify opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and business partners to explore and pursue opportunities. (2) To establish entrepreneurship advisory groups. (3) Become a resource and research hub to help advance entrepreneurship. (4) Pursue an entrepreneurial incubation center focused on advancing collaboration and innovative technology.
