After getting passed over for her dream job due to her lack of tech skills, Nikki Engelbrecht decided to take matters into her own hands.
Her son had just earned his associate degree from SCC and transferred to a four-year university, so she knew SCC would be a great place for her to go back to school and freshen up her skillset. When she took the assessment tests, she was discouraged when she didn’t pass the math portion. SCC’s academic counselors directed her to the retuning learner’s college prep math course.
“My math instructor, Jane Scheele, was not only a great instructor but offered support and encouragement,” Nikki said. “While taking her class I gained the skills and knowledge I certainly didn’t have previously.”
Since passing math, Nikki has started working on an associate degree in business technology, and she hopes to find a career she enjoys.
What’s really valuable, Nikki said, is showing her four sons that no matter how large or small an obstacle seems, you can reach any goal if you invest time and energy into it.
As an added bonus, helping her kids with homework has taken on a whole new light. “I no longer feel as though my information is outdated, and I can help them with confidence and in a more engaging way than I could before,” she said. “We don’t just get through homework now, we explore the subjects and have fun with them.”
“My experience with SCC is that no matter what your personal obstacles are, they will help you reach your goals,” Nikki said. “SCC is truly organized with the success of every student, of any age, in mind.”
