Marc Haynes, R.N., nurse manager at the Washington University Pediatric Clinical Research Unit, graduated from SCC with his associate degree in nursing in 1996.

"I went from a job in an unsecure industry to a career in an industry that has numerous possibilities," he said. "It is exciting, challenging and I have the ability to help people and make a difference."

The former military medic said he worked in both psychiatry and surgery, but chose to leave medicine to work in the auto industry. Then after multiple layoffs, he began attending general education classes at SCC and eventually chose to go into nursing.

"The classes were not large, which allowed me to get the interaction from the teaching staff that helped me to succeed in my academic career," Marc said.

Ann Vernon, one of Marc's former SCC professors, said that SCC was a good choice for him at the time.  "Sometimes life throws you a curve ball. Now he has a good job and likes what he's doing," she said.

Marc said he feels lucky to go to work every day alongside team members and researchers who are working to save lives by advancing medicine.

Marc lives in St. Charles and has one son.
