Prepare for Advising

What you need to know

Advisors are ready to help you! During peak registration times, Academic Advising is available on a walk-in, first-come first-served basis during business hours. To maximize the time you have with an advisor, please review the information below.

This time of the year can be busy, we recommend walking in before 10:00 a.m. for shorter wait times.

Academic Advising Hours
Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

*Academic Advising will have special Saturday Registration Hours on August 3rd, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

How to Prepare

  • Come prepared for your meeting with course ideas, discussion items, placement, transcripts, etc. Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or have a specific concern.
  • Take active responsibility for decisions you make or actions you take to facilitate successful progression towards your educational and career goals.
  • Participate fully in the advising experience by sharing your academic, personal, and career values and goals with your advisor. Be respectful of the advisor.

  • Make regular contact with Academic Advising and don't wait until the last minute to schedule your appointments.
  • Ask instructors and advisors for help when you need it. Seek help before a situation becomes a crisis.
  • Follow through on suggestions and referrals offered by your advisor to further your academic, career, and personal goals. Write things down, it really helps!
  • Inform Academic Advising of any academic difficulties or program or career changes.
  • Become knowledgeable about key dates and deadlines.
  • Frequently check for emails sent to your SCC email account (ending @my.stchas.edu).

First-Time Freshmen students will work with an Academic Advisor at Cougar ROAR. Students should sign-up right away to secure their spot at Cougar ROAR.

*Due to the high volume of students requesting in-person advising sessions, virtual appointments are not available during peak registration periods, typically January and July-August of each academic year.

Nursing & Allied Health Advising appointments are scheduled separately from general advising. Click here to schedule an appointment with a Nursing & Allied Health Advisor.
