Prepare for Advising

What you need to know

You can expect to have 30 minutes from your appointment start time with your academic advisor during your advising session. To maximize the time you have with your advisor, please review the list of expectations below.

We understand that unexpected events may affect your scheduled appointment. If you are unable to make the appointment, you will need to reschedule. If you don't join/arrive to your meeting within 10 minutes of the scheduled start time or do not meet the expectations below you will be asked to reschedule.

*SCC campus is closed Thursday, July 4th. The Academic Advising office will reopen Friday, July 5th at 9:00 a.m.

Advising Appointments

Advisors are ready to help you! Walk-in Advising Appointments are available during business hours. If you need to schedule an appointment please email advising@stchas.edu. 

 

What to Expect

  • Come prepared for your appointment with course ideas, discussion items,
    transcripts, etc. Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or have a specific concern.
    • Review your degree Pathways (www.stchas.edu/pathways)
    • Create a list of class options (either in your Student Planning or on paper) to review with advisor. (Review the tutorial video on Adding courses to my Student Plan)
    • Have questions prepared you want to discuss with an advisor. Review the Advising Worksheet for things to consider before your meeting.
    • Be prepared to login to your mySCC Portal with your username and password
  • Take active responsibility for decisions you make or actions you take to facilitate successful progression towards your educational and career goals.
  • Participate fully in the advising experience by sharing your academic, personal, and career values and goals with your advisor. Be respectful of the advisor.

  • Make regular contact with your advisor and don't wait until the last minute to schedule your appointments.
  • Ask instructors and advisors for help when you need it. Seek help before a situation becomes a crisis.
  • Follow through on suggestions and referrals offered by your advisor to further your academic, career, and personal goals. Write things down, it really helps!
  • Inform your advisor of any academic difficulties or program or career changes.
  • Become knowledgeable about key dates and deadlines.
  • Frequently check for emails sent to your SCC email account (ending @my.stchas.edu).

First-Time Freshmen students will work with an Academic Advisor at Cougar ROAR. Students should sign-up right away to secure their spot at Cougar ROAR.

*Due to the high volume of students requesting in-person advising sessions, virtual appointments are not available during peak registration periods, typically January and August of each academic year.
