New this year - Fleet Feet to chip time and provide almost instant results

Break out your ‘80s gear, because “That ‘80s Run” and its coordinating wellness expo will be back Saturday, April 30. The 24th annual event is set on the SCC campus, Great River Greenway trails and the streets of Cottleville. It will be a morning of recreation, health, education and fun with a tubular twist.

Once again featured at the annual run event will be the popular 10K Race (6.2 miles), 5K Race (3.1 miles) and 1-Mile Fun Run. The 5K/10K will start at 7:30 a.m. in front of the SCC Student Center in the Green Parking Lot and finish in the same location. New this year, the 5K and 10K routes will be chip timed by Fleet Feet. The routes will wind through the college campus and then take runners on the roads and paved trails in Cottleville.

The 1-Mile Fun Run will start at 9:15 a.m. near the entrances to the Red and Green parking lots on campus and will finish in the same location. Each event will feature age group awards. All runners will receive an ‘80s-themed finishers medal.

“These are competitive, timed races, but the ‘80s theme will encourage runners to bring out their friends and have a laugh while they get in a run in a beautiful setting,” said Heather McDorman, vice president for enrollment and marketing services and race director.

The overall male and female winner of the 5K will each take home a $50 cash prize and overall male and female winners in the 10K will receive $100. At least five people will be named winners for best ‘80s costumes, and there will be drawings for several prize baskets. All race participants will receive two free tickets to enter in the prize basket drawings.

Entrants in the 5K and 10K races (ages 18 and older) will automatically be entered for a chance to win the $1,000 Brenda Hollrah Memorial Scholarship to SCC, and the first 200 runners through the door at La Chata Mexican Cuisine will receive a free drink coupon to a bodacious after-party.

Participants are encouraged to dress in ‘80s clothes or as their favorite ‘80s pop icon. Music from the era will be played by Precision Health Group and other ‘80s fun includes a life-size polaroid frame station, custom throwback finisher medals, neon wristbands, neon dry-tec T-shirts (guaranteed for registrations received by April 8) and special surprise awards. “This will undoubtedly be one of the most colorful and crazy events on campus to date,” McDorman said.

The entry fee for the 1-Mile Fun Run is $20, late registration (April 9-24) is $25 and race-week registration (April 25-30, including day-of) is $30. Entry for the 10K and 5K is $30, late registration (April 9-24) is $35 and race-week registration (April 25-30, including day-of) is $40. The entry fee includes a neon-colored dry-tec T-shirt (guaranteed for registrations received by April 8), refreshments and tickets into the prize basket drawings. Participants may register online, by mail or in person for one of the run events. Online registration is available through the event website, that80srun.org.

There will be refreshments courtesy of local food stores and restaurants. Missouri American Water Company will provide water stations for the runners. For finishers, Anthony's Produce will give away fruit and Christian Foods/McDonald's will give away water bottles.

The Health and Wellness Expo is free and open to the public from 7:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. in the Student Center, including entry to more than 40 exhibits and leisure, health and wellness information, screenings, products samples and refreshments.
