The students honored include:

  • Charles Albers.  Charles plans to start a business that promotes sustainability and produces green products.  His volunteer work reflects that interest -- he is working on a project to restore the ecological habitat of an area park.  It started with picking up trash, and it's led to participating in a biodiversity study of the park.
  • Peter Gent.  Peter is a student with diverse interests.  He's been a cook and a carpenter's layman, he's founded an Ultimate Frisbee club, and he's volunteered for a soup kitchen.  He says he wants to be an inventor and make travel to Mars possible, so he's working toward degrees in mechanical engineering and computer science.  His advisors describe him as organized, energetic, and reliable -- qualities that will help him achieve his goals, whether he makes it to Mars or not.

Missouri's community colleges are governed by locally elected boards of trustees.  The colleges work together to advance common agendas through the Missouri Community College Association, or MCCA.
