Music Private Lessons are offered to community members and SCC non-performing arts majors. Find additional information at www.stchas.edu/lp/private-lessons. If you are a performing arts (music, theatre) major at SCC, and you need to enroll for credit, please register through the normal course registration process.
The Performing Arts Department unifies the theatre and music credit programs with the performing arts opportunities for youth and community members. The department attracts and serves students with various levels of interest, experience, and talent in the performing arts.
With the 400-seat theatre, multiple studios, two scene shops, and private lesson rooms, the Shook Theatre Building is home to our theatre and music classes, as well as numerous performances and concerts throughout the year.
Whether you are a young artist at the beginning of your artistic journey, a college student looking to pursue a degree or advanced training in the performing arts, or a community member who has found the arts as a fulfilling part of your life, the Performing Arts Department has a way for you to be involved!

Learn More »Samantha Stavely is the Academic Coordinator for Performing Arts at SCC. Samantha previously served as the Artistic Director of the The Young Artist Training Program and Young People's at SCC.
James A. Martin is Associate Professor of Instrumental Studies at SCC, where he directs the Concert Band and Jazz Band. He also teaches Low Brass and courses in Brass Methods, Conducting, and Music Literature. He was the Bass Trombonist with the Buddy Rich Big Band (1985-1987) and with the Orchestra del Maggio Musical of Florence, Italy under Zubin Mehta (1989-1990). Martin has played Bass and Contrabass Trombone as an extra performer with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, including several performances at Carnegie Hall, the 1995 tour of Japan, and on several recordings. He has also performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. An active freelancer, he performs regularly at the Fox Theater and the Muny, and is a member of the St. Louis Brass Ensemble. Martin received a BA in Mathematics and BA in Music Education from St. Louis University and the MM in Trombone Performance with additional DMA studies from the Eastman School of Music. His major professors include John Marcellus, Edward Kleinhammer, Arnold Jacobs, and Jeffrey Reynolds. An in-demand clinician with area schools and universities, he also co-teaches at the Eastman Summer Trombone Institute.
Becky Thorn serves as Music Program Chair and Assistant Professor of Music at SCC. In addition to directing choir, she has taught a variety of classes, including opera theatre, music history, appreciation, theory, and ear-training. Mrs. Thorn has taught for Webster University, performed and directed both church and community theatre, developed a private voice studio, and maintained her professional profile as a vocal adjudicator/clinician in the state of Missouri. She is a member of the National and MO Associations of Music Education and of Choral Directors. Mrs. Thorn earned an MA in Vocal Pedagogy from Webster and graduated from MBU with a double-major BA in Music Education and Vocal Performance. Invited back to sing on her alma mater stage several times, her favourites include performing as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute and the North American Premiere soloist for Patrick Hawes’ Song of Songs. Most recently, Mrs. Thorn was selected as MBU’s Distinguished Alumna 2017 and SCC President’s Council Faculty Award Oct. 2018. She has directed and performed in travelling music ensembles throughout the Mid-West, assistant produced and recorded original songs and arrangements, and participates in local music ministry. Mrs. Thorn is married and has three children.
Josiah Haan is the Interim Artistic Director of Young People’s Theatre at SCC. As Artistic Director of Young People’s Theatre, Josiah works with youth ages 8-19 to learn all aspects of theatre and perform high quality productions. Young People’s Theatre has been nominated for over twenty awards from Arts for Life and continues to be one of the leading performance groups for youth in the area.
