Brunnworth and Sandefur Are Women's and Men's Overall Winners in the 10K Race; Hollenbeck Middle School and Dardenne Elementary School Win Highest Participation Trophies in 1-Mile Fun Run
“We are pleased to offer such a fun, fitness-oriented event to the community each
year,” said Heather McDorman, race co-coordinator and vice president for marketing
and communications at the college. “It's great to see community members of all ages
and ability levels participate in the run/walk events, as well as have the opportunity
to visit booths from a variety of local vendors.” The 10K course is certified by
USA Track and Field (USATF).
In the 10K Race, Chris Sandefur, 23, of Pacific, was first to cross the finish line.
He came in with a time of 33 minutes, 58 seconds, followed by Mike Kralik, of St.
Charles, at 38:30, and Nathan Good, 18, of St. Peters, at 39:17. Danielle Brunnworth,
40, of O'Fallon, was the first woman to cross the finish line, coming in sixth overall with a time of 45:11. Sandefur and Brunnworth, the male and female overall
winners, each received a $100 cash prize.
In the top SCC student, alumni, and employee categories, the first male SCC student
to cross the finish line was Kent Saettele (41:25) and the first female student to
finish was Susan Chapman (1:02.39). The first male alum to cross the finish line
was Brian Schoenholz (39:59), and the first female alum was Anne-Marie Moran (48:46).
In the employee division, Mike Kralik (38:30), theater technical assistant, was the
first male to cross the finish line. The first female employee to finish was Janet
Ouellette, accounting specialist (1:11:23).
Seven racing chair racers representing the Disabled Athlete Sports Association (DASA)
participated in the SCC 10K course for the first time.
More than 85 trophies and medals were awarded in age group categories in both the
10K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run events. The 3-mile walk was non-competitive. About 300
runners entered the 10K race; the Fun Run, 157; and the 3-mile walk, 82. A total
of 539 runners and walkers registered for the event.
In the 1-Mile Fun Run, runners of all ages lined up to test their skills on the course
that tours the SCC campus. Of the 157 runners, 110 were students in kindergarten through
grade 8, and represented 30 area schools.
In this year's annual Highest Participation Challenge, the competition was divided
between Grades K-5 and Grades 6-8, with the Fun Runs for the two age groups beginning
at staggered times.
In the Grades 6-8 Challenge, Hollenbeck Middle School in the Francis Howell School
District took home the Highest Participation Traveling Trophy with 26 participants.
This is the 10th consecutive year Hollenbeck students have won the competition. In
the Grades K-5 Challenge, Dardenne Elementary School in the Fort Zumwalt School District
took home the trophy with 22 participants in its fourth consecutive win. Hollenbeck
and Dardenne were each awarded a $100 gift card to go toward fitness/wellness supplies
for the school.
The races and the 3-mile walk were featured events in the college's annual Spring
Wellness Festival, which also included some 40 exhibit booths with health and wellness
information presented by hospitals, agencies, fitness organizations, businesses, and
institutions in the area.
