Malice in Wonderland
London, April 1897Police were summoned to the home of Miss Bea Shure at Number 17 Byda Way in West London. A maid servant, bringing tea into the sitting room, found four women dead in their seats, including the hostess, Bea Shure. The women, all members of the “West London Literate Society” had been having their monthly discussion. The servant reported that they had been engaged in a lively discussion when she left them and then, fifteen minutes later, she returned with the tea to find them all dead, frozen in their seats. Beside the hostess, the other victims were: Emma Grayshunn, Prudence Juress, and Linda Hand. Copies of Lewis Carroll’s book were on the table before the victims and each victim seemed to be covered with a coating of a sugary compound that prevented them from moving and also prevented breathing. Each of the young women apparently died of suffocation caused by being completely immersed in, for want of a better word, candy.
This was the second occurrence of this kind in London. A month ago, at the Central London home of one Mary Gold, she and two other young ladies, were found dead in exactly the same condition.
Scotland Yard pathologists are at a loss to determine how the crimes were committed and why they were committed. Needless to say, no one has any idea just how they were committed. It is for this reason that they have consulted with Shirley Holmes, sister of the famous detective and also a literary critic for the Times of London, for her aid and assistance. This evening Miss Holmes has assembled some of the finest minds in London to work on the problem.
Costumes encouraged! Prizes will be awarded for Most Original Costume, Best Costume, Most Active Participant, Best Detective Work and various attendance prizes.
