Center Stage Theatre is holding a casting call for “The Giver” at St. Charles Community College. There are two adult roles for women, three adult roles for men and five roles portraying child that may be cast using children or students/performers who can play a role younger than their physical age. There will also be an ensemble to portray members of the community.

Auditions are Monday, March 9, and Tuesday, March 10. All auditions are in the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building, Room 110. Callbacks–by invitation only–will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. Performance dates are April 22-26.

Auditions are open to the community and will be one-on-one with the director in five-minute time slots. Participants should prepare a one-minute dramatic contemporary monologue. The monologue does not need to be memorized but you should be familiar enough with the material that you can look up while delivering it. A copy of the script is available at the SCC library.

Jonas' world is perfect. Everything is under control and safe. There is no war, fear or pain. But there are also no choices, and every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12, he is chosen for special training – to receive and keep the memories of the community – from The Giver. The Giver is the only person who holds the memories of real pain and joy. Now Jonas will learn the truth about life and the hypocrisy of his utopian world. Through this astonishing and moving adaptation, discover what it means to grow up, to grow wise and to take control of your own destiny.

This performance of “The Giver”, based on the book by Lois Lowry and adapted by Eric Coble, is produced by special arrangement with the Dramatic Publishing Company Inc. Laura Enstall will direct the performances. Set and lighting design will be provided by Jeff Roop and costume design will be provided by Jane Bagnall.
