SCC women’s soccer defeats NEO A&M 2-1

Published: 10/03/2016

St. Charles Community College’s Women’s Soccer set out to take pressure off its defense with more shots on goal during its faceoff with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEO A&M) in Miami, Okla.

“We have been focusing on our forwards making the right runs and our team putting the ball into an area that we can finish,” said Josh Tyler, SCC Women’s Soccer head coach. “We can dominate games, just can’t find the net.”

Despite being in control of the game from the start, at halftime the score was tied at 0-0. The Cougars only allowed two shots on goal and put strong pressure on NEO A&M’s keeper.

Nine minutes into the second half, SCC’s Deja Lundberg broke through the back line and had a great shot on goal that was stopped by NEO A&M’s keeper. Sydney Gentry was there to clean it up for her fifth goal of the season.

Five minutes later, Lundberg grabbed her second assist of the game with a pass to Angela Maxvill who touched the ball past the keeper for her second goal of the year.

“We have been working all week on finishing and making the right runs,” said Maxvill. “Deja played a great ball that I was able to run onto. All the hard work paid off.”

With 15 minutes left in the game, NEO A&M broke through SCC’s back line for a goal and continued to put pressure on the Cougars for the remainder of the game.

SCC held them off for a 2-1 victory.

“It’s always nice getting a win, but this win was very much needed,” Tyler said. “Everyone played very well today, and we are starting to really jell as a team. It will only get better from here. We really played as a team today, and it showed with a win.”

SCC face Region XVI opponent Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods on Tuesday, Oct. 4, and will travel to St. Louis Community College for the last regular season regional game. Both games are must wins for SCC if they want to shore up their third straight No. #1 seed.
