SCC to host 17th annual High School Math Tournament March 1

Published: 02/10/2014

Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Student Center Scooter’s Place. The awards ceremony starts immediately following the testing at 12:45 p.m. in Scooter’s Place. The format is in accordance with guidelines on www.mathleague.org.

Made possible by an SCC Foundation mini-grant, SCC will charge only $1 per student this year. “This is a great deal for students,” said Joe Howe, SCC professor of math and one of the tournament organizers.  “I would like to encourage both first-time and returning students to get involved.”

The tournament consists of high school students in grades nine, 10, 11 and 12. The tournament showcases mathematical skills and allows students to compete professionally among peers to win awards, compete at the state event and qualify for scholarships. Students can come alone or in a group. The winners will receive awards/ribbons.

“We are entering our 17th year of St. Charles Community College hosting the area math tournament. It is a great time to be involved and compete,” Howe said. “We always look forward to this event and seeing students enjoying and pursing mathematics.”

The tournament will include free doughnuts, coffee and juice for everyone, starting at 8 a.m. in the Student Center. There are also free giveaways to all participating students.
