Mobile lab comes to SCC as part of Hearing Instrument Science program

Published: 07/09/2013

“The program is one of three hearing instrument programs in the nation”, said Lawrence Brethower, ScD, BC-HIS, director of OTC’s Hearing Instrument Science program, which includes a state-of-the-art mobile lab housed in a 44-foot motor coach with desks, computers and training equipment.

Ozarks Technical Community College is the first college in the state to offer a two-year degree in hearing instrument science.

“We were pleased to welcome these students to campus and have this type of training available in our region of the state,” said Tammie De Los Santos, manager of workforce development initiatives, who coordinates SCC’s participation in the program. De Los Santos said those currently participating in the Hearing Instrument Science program are returning learners who are working in the field and looking to get a degree, or those unemployed or underemployed looking to retrain for a new career.

The partnership was made possible by the MoHealthWINs grant, awarded to community colleges across the state to train Missourians for careers in growing healthcare occupations, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration.

Students accepted into the competitive Hearing Instrument Science program also met the eligibility requirements of the MoHealthWINs grant.

The mobile lab will return to SCC July 12-13.
