Tiffany Ramirez never thought that going to college was a possibility. When she was a child, her father was diagnosed with leukemia so her parents decided to have her homeschooled.

“Since the books I was schooled with growing up weren’t accredited, I needed to get my GED if I wanted to go to college,” said Tiffany. “I was so afraid to take the test, so I put it off.”

In addition to college, Tiffany had dreams of becoming a foster parent as a way to give back to others. By age 17, she was married and had a child of her own, so the timing was not right.

“Then it hit me. I don’t have to help one child at a time. I can become a social worker and help hundreds of families at once,” Tiffany said. “That’s when I decided to go back to school.”

Tiffany started the GED program at SCC in the fall of 2011. She earned her GED in January of 2012 and immediately enrolled in college courses.

“I love everything about SCC. You can get a great education for a great price,” she said. “The people here really want you to succeed, not just while you are at SCC, but throughout your entire career.”

As president of SCC’s Student Senate and president of Tau Upsilon Alpha, the National Organization for Human Services Honor Society, Tiffany says she enjoys being involved. “There are so many organizations on campus,” she said. “There are also art exhibits, musicals, film showings and more. You don’t have to drive downtown to experience that kind of stuff. It’s all right here at SCC.”

Tiffany earned an Associate of Arts degree and an Associate of Applied Science degree in human services from SCC in spring 2016.

“I don’t want to leave this campus,” she said. “If I could stay at SCC to get my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, I would. I love it that much.”

She is pursuing bachelor's degrees in social work and psychology and a master's degree in social work. Her dream is to make a difference to others by working with kids in foster care and their families.
