For SCC professor, Mary Ann Sadler, students aren’t the only ones who should seek learning opportunities.

“It’s important for educators to stay current, especially in the field of science,” Mary Ann said. “Taking classes and workshops keeps me relevant for my students.”

As a professor of human biology, anatomy and physiology at SCC for more than 12 years, she said she enjoys the combination of student interaction and the ever-changing world of science.

“I find working with a diverse group of students very rewarding,” Mary Ann said. “The stimulation of interesting students and faculty at SCC keeps me engaged.”

In her latest effort to learn about recent developments in science, Mary Ann attended Washington University’s “Mini-Medical School.”

Mini-Medical School educates the community by sharing the expertise of Washington University’s medical faculty. It provides participants with the latest information in medical research.

“I learned something every week,” she said. “The speakers were great, and I loved getting to do hands-on activities with new instruments in the field.”

Education has always been a priority for Mary Ann. She received her undergrad from DePauw University in biology and went on to receive her master’s degree at Washington University in biology.

“I’ve known science was the right route for me for as long as I can remember,” she said. “When I was young, I wanted to be a vet. I’ve since realized that I have a passion for teaching science.”

Mary Ann encourages students to follow their own path. “You should find what you enjoy and do it,” she said. “If you are doing what you love, it can be very rewarding.”
