College Orientation Course (COL 101)

College Orientation

Orientation to College (COL 101) is a course designed to improve academic success of freshman college students. It is required of all new college students who are taking 9 or more credit hours in the spring and fall semesters and 5 or more in the summer. Students taking this course learn about and participate in many aspects of college life, including the following:

  • time management
  • notetaking
  • test taking
  • campus involvement
  • instructor expectations
  • college resources and procedures
  • library resources
  • networking / support groups
  • identifying individual learning styles
  • critical thinking
  • goal setting
  • choosing a major / career
  • using the internet
  • writing / speaking

Studies have shown that students who successfully complete this type of course typically have higher grades, are more likely to complete college, use the library and other campus support facilities more frequently, and become more involved in campus activities than those who have not taken an orientation course. In addition to freshman students, others who have been out of school for some time or who have had problems with college classes in the past will greatly benefit from taking Orientation to College.
