Longtime Friends Lead SCC Baseball Into 2007 Season
Having played together since recreation-league ball in elementary school,
SCC
sophomores Aren Cummings and Josh Street are entering what may be their
final season together as teammates.
Attending different high schools, Cummings and Street managed to maintain their close personal relationship by competing on the same summer teams. After their senior seasons, they decided together to play baseball at SCC.
Making an immediate impact as freshmen, the two Cougars will be counted on to use their experience to lead a young 2007 squad.
“There is definitely more weight on our shoulders this year,” Cummings said. “Last year we weren’t really expected to do much, but this year, we are the upperclassmen.”
On the field, when Cummings is not serving as the Cougars’ No. 1 pitcher, he and Street anchor the middle infield, playing second base and shortstop respectively. In high school both were second basemen, but Street made the switch to short once he came to SCC, manning the crucial infield position for the first time in his career.
With a close friend residing on the other side of second base, Street’s
transition to shortstop was an easy one. “We have a great
chemistry; we always know what the other person is going to do,” Street
said.
Their chemistry on and off the field has not gone unnoticed by Head Coach
Chris Gober. Always traveling and working out together, their relationship
has helped them become better players and team leaders.
“They remind me of when kids first learn to play sports,” Gober said. “They want to challenge themselves and get better, and they both have great attitudes. I think that’s what makes them really special.”
