SCC Completed Its First Competitive Play in Men's
and Women's Soccer at the NJCAA Division I Level
St. Charles Community College completed its first competitive play in men’s and women’s soccer at the NJCAA division I level. Both teams made strong showings in their inaugural campaigns. The men’s team, headed up by Coach Tom Kearns, finished the season with a respectable 7-10-2 overall record and a 2-3-2 regional record. Two Cougars garnered NJCAA All-Region XVI honors. Freshman defender Brad Jacobsen, a Fort Zumwalt West product, was named to the All-Region First Team, and freshman forward Scott Hunter from Francis Howell was named Second Team All-Region. Hunter also earned Second Team All-MCCAC honors as a forward. The men’s soccer team and their coaching staff were recognized by coaches and member schools of the MCCAC conference for their ethical behavior and fair play winning the MCCAC Soccer Sportsmanship Award.
The Lady Cougars, under the guidance of Coach Emily Holbrook, finished with an impressive 8-6-1 overall record and a 1-1-1 regional record. The Lady Cougars finished in a third-place tie at the Region XVI Women’s Soccer Tournament hosted by St. Charles Community College. Six members of the women’s squad garnered post-season accolades. Freshman center midfield Lexi Baez from Francis Howell Central earned First Team All-Region XVI honors and was named Co-Region XVI Player of the Year. Freshman center striker Lisa Sanford, a product of Fort Zumwalt North, was also named First Team All-Region XVI. Sanford was also named Second Team All-MCCAC as a center striker. Freshman striker Emily Kersting from Fort Zumwalt North was named All-Region First Team. Kersting was also named Second Team All-MCCAC as a striker. Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Barczewski, a Fort Zumwalt North graduate, was named Second Team All-Region XVI. Freshman right wing midfield Megan Eissler from Fort Zumwalt West earned All-MCCAC First Team honors. Center midfield Cayla Pisciotta, a graduate of Trinity Catholic, was named Second Team All-MCCAC.
The future looks good for both squads. Of the 42 young men and women who choose to represent SCC on the soccer field, 41 were freshmen. With some new additions through recruitment and a strong returning class in 2010, Coach Gober believes the SCC coaching staffs have built a solid foundation with a sound future for each program. “I have no doubt that both teams will be strong contenders for both the NJCAA Region XVI title and the MCCAC conference championship,” says Gober.
