HOCKEY CLUB CONTINUES ITS WINNING WAYS

If it’s not luck that keeps the SCC Roller Hockey Club winning game after game, then it must be the competition, right? Wrong, according to SCC coach Justin Goad.

“Our goaltending, behind starter Kevin Hesemann, has matured to a superior level in our league,” Goad said. “And it’s not just one player – we have considerable depth in goal and in all our player positions.”

Everything is falling into place for the No. 1-ranked Cougars at the season’s halfway point. Heading into the holiday season break, SCC has a strong 6-1-0 record. The team’s sole loss came against powerhouse rival Lindenwood University on Nov. 18.

“We have a strong scoring artillery this season, led by veteran Gus Maloney, Ryan Covington, Brent Propp, and Todd Hoeferlin,” Goad said. “We’re strong – our plays are clicking and our players continue to develop.”

The “B” Division club team has enjoyed some success of its own in the first half of the season, closing out November with a 4-2-0 record. The team is still in contention for a strong finish in the standings, trailing Lindenwood University, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Mizzou.

Admission to games is free. For a complete game schedule, visit www.greatplains hockey.com and click on “Division III.”

SCC COUGARS DIVISION-III (A) TEAM FALLS TO BROWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The Cougars suffered a disappointing 5-4 loss to Broward Community College in the first game of the round robin portion of the NCRHA national championship tournament yesterday afternoon. Since all teams are guaranteed three games in the tournament, the loss does not hinder their shot at the national title. The elimination round begins Friday afternoon.

The DIII Cougars’ next match-up is against Macomb Community College at 9:45 p.m. tonight at Matteson Square Gardens in St. Peters.

SUCCESS CONTINUES FOR COUGARS B-DIVISION TEAM

The B-Division Cougars have seen a solid start in tournament play, defeating University of California-Santa Barbara 5-3 this morning as well as Texas A&M 8-1 yesterday.

The B team will face tough competition at 6:30 p.m. tonight against Suffolk County Community College, who is also 2-0 in tournament play. The game will be at Matteson’s.

COUGAR HOCKEY TEAMS SEE CONTINUED SUCCESS IN LEAGUE PLAY
Both Teams Hopeful of Invite to National Tournament in April

Open the cages and unleash the Cougars – the SCC Division-III roller hockey team has one of the best records in the country.

Their 13-1-0 record at press time was good enough for the top spot among the 12 teams in their division, which includes teams from New York, Texas, and California. Only three teams in the nation have better records than SCC, including Michigan State (14-0-0), and California State-Long Beach (15-1-0). SCC will not face either team this season. Lindenwood University, who recently handed the Cougars their first loss of the season, is also included in the top five.

“Everything’s clicking right now,” said Cougars Coach Justin Goad. “Both teams are performing much better than any of us could have anticipated.”

Not to be outdone, the Division-B Cougars have improved their record to 12-1-0, one game behind Lindenwood University (13-0-0) and one ahead of St. Louis Community College-Meramec (11-2-0).

On the individual level, sophomore Blake Propp is currently ranked sixth in the country in Division-III for goals scored (19). Second-year teammate Gus Maloney is two slots back with 17 goals on the season.

This year’s National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) championship tournament will take place April 4-7 in St. Peters at Matteson’s.
