Nursing

Upon graduation nursing students will be able to demonstrate the following concepts: 

• HUMAN FLOURISHING: 
  Practical Nursing: Promote the human dignity, integrity, self-determination, and personal growth of patients, oneself, and members of the health care team. 
  Associate Degree Nursing: Advocate for patients and families in ways that promote their self-determination, integrity, and ongoing growth as human beings.
• PATIENT CENTERED CARE: 
  Practical nursing and ADN: Recognize the patient or designee as the source of control and full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient's preferences, values, and needs.
• NURSING JUDGMENT: 
  Practical Nursing: Provides a rationale for judgements used in the provisions of safe, quality care and for decisions that promote the health of patients within a family context.
  ADN: Make judgments in practice, substantiated with evidence, which integrate nursing science in the provision of safe, quality care and promote the health of patients within a family and community context.
• SAFETY: 
  PN and ADN: Minimize risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performances.
• INFORMATICS: 
  PN and ADN: Use information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate errors, and support decision making. 
• PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY: 
  PN: Assess how one's personal strengths and values affect one's identity as a nurse and one's contributions as a member of the health care team. 
  ADN: Implement one's role as a nurse in ways that reflect integrity, responsibility, ethical practice, and an evolving identity as a nurse committed to evidence-based practice, caring, advocacy, and safe, quality care for diverse patients within a family and community context.
• TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION: 
  PN and ADN: Function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision making to achieve quality patient care.
• SPIRIT OF INQUIRY:
  PN: Question the basis for nursing actions, considering research evidence, tradition, and patient preferences
  ADN: Examine the evidence that underlies clinical nursing practice to challenge the status quo, question underlying assumptions, and offer new insights to improve the quality of care for patients, families, and communities
• QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: 
  PN and ADN: Use data to monitor the outcomes of care processes and use improvement methods to design and test changes to continuously improve the quality and safety of health care systems. 
• EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE: 
  PN and ADN: Integrate best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care.

The St. Charles Community College nursing programs require pre-determined classroom, skills lab, and clinical experiences. A nursing student is not required to disclose any disability but should ensure the ability to provide safe patient care in all healthcare settings. Potential or current nursing students should discuss potential accommodation needs with SCC’s Disability Support Services. 

The delivery of safe, effective nursing care during clinical rotations requires that nursing students be able to perform essential functions listed here. The inability of a student to perform these functions may result in the student being unable to meet course objectives, thus unable to progress in their nursing program.  

The technical standards and essential functions listed here are not conditions of admission to a St. Charles Community College nursing program. The purpose of this list is to provide transparent information to potential St. Charles Community College nursing students to enable them to make an informed decision regarding enrollment. 
Essential functions:  

Observation: The nursing student must be able to make accurate visual, tactile, somatic, and auditory observations.  
 
Verbal, non-verbal, and written communication: The nursing student must be able to verbally and non-verbally communicate effectively and clearly with the health care team, patients, nursing faculty, and nursing students. The nursing student must be able to document their observations into patient health records. 

Motor movements: The nursing student must be able to perform gross and fine motor movements needed to perform patient assessments, prepare and administer medications, perform diagnostic tests, and assist patients with mobility. Demands at the clinical environments often include extended periods of physical exertion.  

Mental/emotional: The nursing student must be able to cope with stressors, display safe judgment, and demonstrate integrity. 

Graduation from St. Charles Community College nursing program(s) does not guarantee eligibility to take the licensure exam. “The Missouri State Board of Nursing may refuse to issue or reinstate any certificate of registration or authority, permit or license required pursuant to this chapter for one or any combination of causes stated in subsection two of this section or the board may, as a condition to issuing or reinstating any such permit or license, require a person to submit himself or herself for identification, intervention, treatment, or monitoring by the intervention program and alternative program as provided in section 335.067 ." RSMo 335.066.

The Practical Nursing Certificate and Associate of Science in Nursing programs are fully approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

The associate nursing program at St. Charles Community College at the Dardenne Creek Campus located in Dardenne Prairie, MO is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Requirements:

• Students must apply for nursing with an allied health advisor 
• Complete MAT 098 or assess into MAT 121+
• Present current HESI A2 scores with 75% or above on all subsections.
• Complete BIO 260/L with a final grade of ‘C’ or better.
• Earn a 3.0 GPA on 30+ completed college-level credits or a 2.8 GPA with 22 ACT, 2.9 GPA with 21 ACT, or 3.0 GPA with 20 ACT
• Background checks
• Drug screening
• Complete health record, including immunizations and TB testing
• Current health insurance
• Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
• Payment of tuition and fees 

A $25 application fee is required to finalize the process. 

*ALL science courses need to be completed with a ‘C’ or better for the completion of the program and must be fewer than 5 years old.
