ANT 102-N1: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

Summer 2008

Dear Online Student:

Welcome to Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (ANT 102)! Warning; your life may change after this class! Well, this may be an extreme statement, but this course will introduce you to the complexity of human social and cultural life. You will learn about basic anthropological concepts, theories, terminology, and methodology. Because this is an Internet class it does require more self-motivation and discipline than a traditional college class. Please keep current on all assignments.

This course is conducted over the Internet, but the format has been modified to compensate for any discrepancies between the classroom setting and the Internet. Please take advantage of all these avenues including: class participation via online discussion, audio-visual media via the video that accompanies your text, and lecture notes and assignments posted on our class site.

Instructor:

My name is Yvette Hubbman and I can be reached at 636-922-8398 (this is Christy Gant’s phone number, division secretary for Social Sciences). I will promptly receive any message you leave with her. The academic office is Social Science (SSB 1104). Another contact is the Distance Learning Office at 636-922-8470. My e-mail address is yhubbman@stchas.edu, this is a great way to contact me.

Course Meetings: There are a total two required class meetings.

The first is a course orientation. Here we will discuss course objectives and expectations and to familiarize you with WebCT/Blackboard, our Internet format (you should already have you iConnect password for WebCT/Blackboard and you will be meet with the instructor and classmates). You will be lost if you do not attend the orientation that's why it's mandatory.

Tuesday, June 3 -TECH 101 - Orientation - 8 p.m

Tuesday, July 22 - SSB 2401 - Final - 8 p.m.

For this course you will need:

You will need to know how to use a computer. During the orientation you will learn how to access the class using WebCT/Blackboard, but you should already have basic computer skills. If you are not comfortable with the technology you may reconsider this course format and consider taking the course at the Mid Rivers Mall Drive campus. You will need an Internet connection. With WebCT/Blackboard we have e-mail capabilities and use that system for our class discussions. You will be given instructions at the orientation for how to use the WebCT/Blackboard e-mail. You will also need an Internet browser (Netscape 3, 4 or Internet Explorer 4) and you will need Windows software (version 3.1 or newer).

You will also need the text and DVD/CD Rom for the course. The text is Seeing Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology through Film, fourth edition, by Karl Heider and published by Allyn and Bacon, 2007. One ethnographic DVD comes with the text – so please don’t leave the bookstore without one. We will be using these short films in the course. We will also be using Annual Editions: Anthropology, 07/08. This text will be used to add to our class discussions and help to illustrate concepts to the Heider text.

Random information: If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call. A great resource for all campus services is the Web site at www.stchas.edu . Here you will find bookstore hours, library hours, online library catalog, student activities and athletics, ACE computer center hours, and much, much more.

WebCT/Blackboard courses will not be available to students until 5 working days prior to the start of the semester.

Again, Welcome to Cultural Anthropology! I’m looking forward to meeting you at the course orientation.

Sincerely,

Yvette Hubbman
Adjunct Instructor
Department of Business and Social Sciences
